Aging Gracefully – That’s for Wimps ! Quite recently I woke up to the fact that I was putting on too much weight and was pretty unfit. naturally I enrolled at the local gym and also quite naturally, like most people, found the gym pretty boring, so gave up.
So I decided to start a more serious exercise routine, and hit the streets around my home in Berkshire. My first thoughts were of slight embarrassment at my great girth. The last time I did proper exercise (when I was a serious athlete @ 10 stone 7 lbs. Yes, your right, that was a few years ago, thanks for reminding me!
My thoughts when I started to exercise after quite a long gap of doing nothing was that I would be at risk of pulling a muscle (I still have a few) but in reality the biggest danger turned out to be a small minority of drivers on the roads.
After several weeks of exposing myself to danger, my conclusion that all drivers should be made to re-sit their driving test every 10 years plus have a mental fitness test. that surely would have failed the haggard middle aged lady in a beaten up car – who deliberately drove her car straight at me.
The good news is that I survived and i two months have lost two stone, what’s more I feel a great deal fitter than I did before, now I must go to the expense of getting all my clothes taken in!
So why have I failed to exercise properly over the years?
Partly laziness and I work hard and at the end of the day, I found I was extremely tired.
My new routine has banished all the tiredness.
Like most things in life, it is a question of attitude, I wonder if George Burns exercised, as he had a great attitude to life…
George Burns
George Burns was a famous comedian, who continued performing to a ripe old age, eventually he passed at age 100 to a Comedy Playhouse in the sky.
Here are George’s comments on aging ….
“Retirement at 65 is ridiculous.
When I was 65, I still had pimples.
I can’t get old; I’m working …
I can’t die. I’m booked.
I look to the future because that is where I am going to the spend the rest of my life.”
As part of my fitness regime, I rarely drink alcohol, but tonight I will be raising a glass to George Burns and toasting his positive attitude !
